Tonatiuh Tona Marquez, the acupuncturist behind TonaHealing.com, was born and raised in Santa Barbara, California. His uncle, Dr. Nephtali Solis, encouraged Tona to study Acupuncture and continue his family's tradition of supporting local community and helping people acheive good health.

Tona started as an Intern Acupuncturist in 2006 and was certified by the State of California in 2008 as a Licensed Acupuncturist (LAc). He advanced his acupuncture skills, under the late Dr. Richard Teh-Fu Tan, master of Balance Method Acupuncture, a system that provides quick and effective pain relief, improves sleep and digestion, regulates hormone balance and the immune system, reduces stress, anxiety and depression. After the passing of his Si Fu, Dr. Tan, Tona continued to refine his balance method acupuncture skills under master students of the late Dr. Tan at Si Yuan.

Currently, Tona is mastering his balance method acupuncture skills at The Acadamy of Acupuncture, where he has achieved the highest certification of Executive Practitioner.

For years, Tona has been providing balance method acupuncture at Issels Medical Center, treating oncology patients by boosting their immune systems, providing pain relief, and treating the side effects of previous western oncology treatments. Previously, he was on staff at the Spine and Orthopedic Center of Santa Barbara using his balance method acupuncture skills in the treatment of back and neck conditions, as well as orthopedic disorders of the shoulder, elbow, wrist, hand, hip, knee, ankle and foot.

Why Community Acupuncture

Community Acupuncture (CA) is a system where people of all walks of life get acupuncture together and everyone pays on a $25-$50 sliding scale. The $25-$50 sliding scale system is an essential component of the community acupuncture model. Patients receiving acupuncture together is another essential component.

CA patients get acupuncture while resting in a reclined chair, in a peaceful, relaxed, open room with other patients. After a quick check-in with Tona, super thin acupuncture "pins" are gently placed, mostly from the elbows to the hands and from the knees to the feet; so there is no need to disrobe. Simply roll up your sleeves and pants’ legs, take off your shoes and socks, recline your chair, close your eyes and relax.

Sticking Together and Healing Together

Once your "pins" are in place, rest for about an hour. You may soon feel more at ease or a little sleepy. Sometimes you’ll take a short nap, or drift in and out a peaceful, dream like rest. If not that's ok too. Usually after 30 to 60 minutes you’ll “wake up” or start to feel a little restless, this means you’re “ready”. Just open your eyes and Tona will notice this, check in with you to make sure you’re “ready” and then remove your "pins".

People may be hesitant to try CA at first. Many come to prefer what CA has to offer. Patients remark that having others resting around them makes them feel more prepared and open to receiving acupuncture. They sometimes are surprised about experiencing deeper peaceful treatments while in a room filled with other patients. They’re also surprised how a few super thin "pins" in their arms and legs can help their back and neck pains, headaches, anxiety, stress and other ailments. One thing that doesn’t surprise them is the price. It’s always the reliable $25 to $50 sliding scale.  Book an appointment online with Tona today.
